You may have noticed that Mr. Selfish and I haven’t been blogging lately. If you follow our blog, you may have surmised that we had Baby Selfish, and you would be correct. Baby Selfish arrived in early February, and we’ve been absolutely consumed with her since.
We are enjoying being new parents, but Mr. Selfish is already quite anxious for our trip to Japan in May. As you can see from the above photo, we are already starting the process of indoctrinating her with all things Totoro so that we can someday take her to the Studio Ghibli Museum outside of Tokyo.
Despite all of this baby time, I did manage to finish the rest of our Selfish Guides. There are now new Selfish Guides for Istanbul, Tanzania, Taiwan, Greece, Northern Ireland, Croatia, and our Game of Thrones tour. I’ve also updated the guides for Seoul to include the rest of South Korea and made a guide to Hong Kong, separate from the China guide.
Enjoy! And does anyone have tips for traveling with a three month old infant in Japan? We’ll be going to Tokyo and Kyoto for two weeks.
Congrats! The post I’ve been waiting for!
Hey guys. Congrats!!! I saw someone has recommended an umbrella stroller. If you can get to the airport without one, all the better. We bought our Combi brand online and got it delivered to our room in Japan. Less that $100 AUD and super light (sub 3 kg).
We found japanese nappies for newborns to be not up to scratch (my japanese wife was so disappointed in her country) however baby food is good, and the cute clothes you are already aware of.
The best thing we found is a collapsable bassinet. It folds to about 60cm by 40cm and 4cm thick with a shoulder strap but when you unfold it, its a padded bassinette with high sides. Perfect for co sleeping in bed as she cannot roll out and underneath you. OR, you can have it beside your bed. We used it right up to 12 months and still use it now sometimes and just dont fold up the base near her feet.
You can get them in baby sections of major department stores. Thats my best recommendation.
Good luck and congratulations again!!!!
Thanks for the tips! A collapsable basinett sounds like a good idea.
Yes, and it folds down to something akin to a model’s or photographers portfolio bag
Wow. Congrats on your beautiful baby! Name?
Baby selfish is so adorable. Congratz again! Can’t wait to follow her adventures.
Thanks! Aside from the Japan trip, we are plotting some domestic travel and Hawaii this year. We’ll see how it goes…
Adorable picture & nice hat. We are waiting to get tickets to the museum for our trip to Japan in August. Did you have trouble getting tickets? They start selling tickets 3 months in advance. The catbus was on loan to the Mr Rogers museum in Pittsburgh a few years ago. They relaxed the rules and even let adults sit inside. https://spy.box.com/s/novvwr9018ry3v969bedspr3xbbys9o8
I hadn’t heard about the Catbus being on loan in Pittsburgh. I would have loved to have seen it there. Part of the reason we had a baby was so that I could cuddle with the giant Catbus while pretending to tend to my little one. 🙂
We didn’t have any problems buying tickets to the Ghibli Museum but we did have to go through a travel agent the first time we went since we purchased them from the U.S.: http://www.jtbgmt.com/eng/ghibli/TicketSystem.html#Regions The second time we went to the museum, we had been living in Japan for a few weeks and just purchased tickets at a Lawson’s convenience store.
Congrats on the new traveler in the family! Get her a passport and sign her up for FF accounts so she can start earning miles.
For your trip to Japan, ask in advance about bassinet seats for her on your flights.
She is still a little too young for this but we found traveling with a real lightweight umbrella stroller was extremely helpful during our travels with my son. We used one like this that is compact and includes a removable canopy: http://www.toysrus.com/buy/lightweight-strollers/babies-r-us-lightweight-umbrella-stroller-navy-1933099-23843426
You can take them on flights and we always had one in the trunk of our cars.
Thanks for the tips! We just took her passport photo the other day and are in the process of applying for her passport. Mr. Selfish has already signed her up for FF accounts too.
We are lucky enough to have a bassinet on the way over to Japan but not yet on the return flight. We’re going to have to plea with the flight attendants I think.
Also, thanks for the stroller rec! We have a Bugaboo Cameleon now but will definitely need something more light weight when she gets older.
