You may have noticed that Mr. Selfish and I haven’t been blogging lately. If you follow our blog, you may have surmised that we had Baby Selfish, and you would be correct. Baby Selfish arrived in early February, and we’ve been absolutely consumed with her since.

We are enjoying being new parents, but Mr. Selfish is already quite anxious for our trip to Japan in May.  As you can see from the above photo, we are already starting the process of indoctrinating her with all things Totoro so that we can someday take her to the Studio Ghibli Museum outside of Tokyo.

I know it has been a while. I have no excuse, other than that we’ve been enjoying our time in SF. I assure you that Mr. Selfish and I are hard at work at our trip reports for Istanbul and Tanzania.

But in the meantime, we’ve finally finished our Selfish Guides for Australia and New Zealand.

Check out the Selfish Guide to Australia here.

This is the Bay of Fires in Tasmania, which was our favorite place to visit in Oz.

Check out the Selfish Guide to New Zealand here.

This is Milford Sound near Queenstown. Take the private jet there. Trust me, do it.

It took me a while but I’ve finally completed the Selfish Guides to Seoul, China, and Japan, which completes the rest of Asia. Considering that Mr. Selfish and I spent 33 days in China and 43 days in Japan, I don’t think that it was that long. Okay, so we did leave Asia about four months ago. I promise that I’ll finish the Selfish Guides to Australia, New Zealand, and Bora Bora in a much shorter time.

Here are a few pics from the new Selfish Guides:

Taking Some Selfish Time Off…

Selfish Year, Selfish Years

When we started traveling 14 months ago, we started this blog as a fun way for friends and family to follow our adventures around the world. 422 posts later, I don’t think either of us expected to still be writing, or to have anyone other than my mom follow the blog.

After a year on the road, we’re finally settling someplace, and even though it’s only for the next few months, it’s a pretty strange feeling. While it’s nice to be back home in the States, the road continues to beckon, and it’s hard not to drop everything and go.

As you may have guessed, we won’t be blogging daily any more, but we will continue blogging. If you want to continue following us, the easiest way is to subscribe to our RSS feed, which is located on the right side of the blog underneath our “Next Location” image.

As others have suggested, we plan on posting about San Francisco as well as our travels on the west coast. We’re already eyeing trips to Portland, Hawaii, Vancouver, Seattle, San Diego, Sedona, Mexico, and the Grand Canyon, to name a few. Plus, there’s our trip to the Maldives and Okinawa in November – I’m already counting down the days!

Thanks again to everyone who followed us on our year long journey around the world. While we’re becoming a little less selfish, our selfish travels are far from over. Hopefully we’ll bump into you out there on a selfish trip of your own!

The Selfish Guide to Photography – Part 2

How to Pose for Photos, How to Take Photos, Photography, Selfish Years, The Selfish Years

As I went over yesterday, Mr. Selfish and I took over 50,000 photos during this past year. Although we weren’t in each of these photos, we were in plenty of them and definitely learned a thing or two about posing for photos.

Although the photographer is very important, a model should also know what he/she is doing. Here are our posing tips.

1.  Know your angles.

Some people look good face on. Others look good from one side. Whatever it is, know your angles and pose that way.

2.  Wear bright colors.

I never realized how important it was to wear bright color clothes in photos until this selfish year. Just look at the difference between the two photos below. In the first, I’m wearing a tan jacket and completely blend in with the background. In the latter, I’m wearing my bright orange coat, and you can easily spot me.

The Selfish Guide to Photography – Part 1

Mr. Selfish and I took over 50,000 photos during our selfish trip, which is approximately 135 photos per day.  Although we are nowhere close to being professionals, we have figured out a thing or two about photography. After all, practice makes perfect, and we’ve had a lot of practice!

Taking Photos1Taking Photos2

Other than our iPhones and iPad, which we never used for photos, Mr. Selfish and I had two cameras on our trip. Mr. Selfish has a Canon EOS REBEL T3i, which is a starter DSLR. For the majority of the trip, he was using the starter kit lens. It wasn’t until we reached Tasmania, Australia that Mr. Selfish upgraded his lens.

I, on the other hand, used a point and click the entire time – the Canon PowerShot S95. Apparently, my point and click now has much newer models but I found that mine worked fine for the vast majority of our photos. While I carried my camera with me at all times, Mr. Selfish only brought his DSLR out on what we thought would be scenic days.

Today, we’ll go over our amateur tips on how to take photos.

Relishing Our Selfishness

22 Wednesday Aug 2012

Mr. Selfish and I had always wanted a dog, so in June 2010, we applied to some of the local rescue centers.  We wanted an older dog that was already potty-trained.  But when we received a call about a littler of six-weeks old puppies a few days later, we scheduled a time to see them almost immediately.

Prior to going, Mr. Selfish spoke to his mom, and she said, “No one ever just visits puppies.”  We didn’t really want a puppy so we figured that we could refrain.

Of course, we didn’t.

That night, we came home with an adorable Terrier mix. We named her Penny.

The first night, we played with her.  She was very cute but clearly needed a lot of training and time.

When I came home from work the next day, Mr. Selfish told me that he couldn’t handle watching a puppy and working on his game at the same time.  Since he was working from home, it would be his primary responsibility to care for Penny.

Heart-broken, I called the rescue center and we returned Penny.  We had only had her for about 24 hours.  Fortunately, she was subsequently adopted by a nice family that already had another dog to show her the ropes.

It was at this moment that I realized that we were currently carefree, with no responsibilities and wanted to remain that way for a few more years at least.  One day, we would have the dog, and yes, the kids too, but not now.

For now, we are selfish and relishing every minute of it.

Goodbye Orlando, Hello World!

09 Thursday Aug 2012

The Beginning of the Selfish Years

It’s hard to imagine that only a week ago Mrs. Selfish and I packed all of our worldly possessions into a 8′ x 16′ x 8′ container and left our Orlando home of 7 years.  Now officially homeless, we’re wandering the world for the next year – hitting an estimated 28 countries and 6 continents. Oh, and did I mention we’re flying business class the majority of the way almost entirely on miles and points?  More on that later.

The trip of a lifetime

Mrs. Selfish and I are travel junkies starting 6 years ago with our first international trip together to Paris. Since then we’ve made it a policy to take at least one international trip a year, and have visited roughly 20 countries at this point.  This trip is a bit different though.

Mrs. Selfish is not much of a roughing it gal – so hostels and camping are out of the question. Some places we’re staying in hotels, others in B&B’s, but we’re spending the majority of our time in apartments.

Unlike previous trips, this one comes fully loaded – two laptops, an iPad, a kindle, 3DS, two iPhones, and two cameras.  I’ll be working the entire way across various projects.  Mrs. Selfish plans on learning various languages, brushing up on her photography, and taking a class or two on her journey to become a Renaissance woman.

So where to from here?  Honestly, I’m not quite sure.  We started the blog because it’s an easy way to let friends and family know where we are and what we’re doing.  Also, it’s the thing to do in this day and age.  Additionally, since I’ve become obsessed with “travel hacking”, it seems like a good way to convince our friends and families of the benefits – we’ve earned upwards of 1.5 million miles in the last 11 months (most without setting foot on a plane), so it’s time to start using them!

First leg of the Selfish Years: Ireland

Although I’m not entirely sure where the blog is heading, Mrs. Selfish and I are heading around Ireland for the next 7 days.  Not only is this my first time driving abroad, but it’s also my driving on the opposite side of the road, and the first time I’ve driven in a manual car in the last 10 years. Further, because Ireland is supposed to be one of the most dangerous driving countries in the world, it makes me more than a little nervous.

But there’s no time to worry about that now.  After wandering around the city for the latter half of the day, it’s time for a Guinness and some rest!

Who’s Selfish?

Mr. and Mrs. Selfish are an obsessively organized couple who sold all their junk to travel abroad for a year. Now settled in San Francisco, they have since visited over 200 cities in 44 countries over 6 continents. This site chronicles their travels.
