Mr. Selfish and I spent a week in Chiang Mai. We rented an apartment, shopped at a western grocery store, and cooked our comfort meals, such as spaghetti and meatballs, mac and cheese, and burritos. As a result, we didn’t venture around Chiang Mai that much. However, we did make sure to stop by the two notable markets in Chiang Mai – the Sunday Walking Street Market and the Night Market.

The Sunday Walking Street Market takes place every Sunday from 4pm until midnight. It takes place right in the heart of the Old City on Ratchadamnoen Road, which is entirely shut down to motor traffic. This market had tons of vendors from northern Thailand, and they all felt and looked like authentic handicraft.

Mr. Selfish and I spent a lovely six weeks in Paris. Every now and then, I look back and think about how great those six weeks were. I miss Paris now and would go back in a heart beat. I therefore looked forward to visiting Dalat, Vietnam – especially because it has a miniature Eiffel Tower. Although you can’t go up it, it was still nice to behold.

Prior to taking this trip, I started following David Lebovitz’s blog. He is a renowned pastry chef, who worked with Alice Waters and has published several dessert books. Mr. Selfish and I have taken to heart many of his recommendations. I also read his book “The Sweet Life in Paris,” and discovered that he lives in the Bastille area in the 11th Arrondissenment.

When Mr. Selfish and I decided to explore Bastille, I secretly hoped that we would run into him at the market perusing the fresh veggies. We had no such luck, but I still enjoyed the Bastille area. Of course, the Opera Bastille and the iconic Bastille memorial is in the 11th Arrondissement. The selection at the Bastille market was also quite diverse.

Mr. Selfish and I visited Vienna, Austria for two days.  The first thing we did was go to the Naschmarkt, which is Vienna’s largest outdoor market.  The market had a great deal of fresh veggies, dried fruits, and spices.  Mr. Selfish and I bought some dried erdbeere (strawberries) to munch on.  There was also a lot of falafel and doner kebab stands.

Borough Market, Camden Market, London, Market, Portobello Road Market

Mr. Selfish and I discovered another cost-efficient way to spend an afternoon – browsing the markets.  From foodie heaven to antiques to alternative clothing, London has the market for you.

1.  Borough Market – Mr. Selfish and I could eat every day at this market.  Not only was the variety tremendous, but everything was fresh.  By far, the very best food stall at this market is Kappacasein, which sells the most delectable grilled cheese sandwich I’ve ever had.  Other yummy delights were from Pieminister for Cornwall pasties, Northfield Kitchen for salt beef sandwiches, and the Guildable Manor for their mixed grill sandwich.  Although there is very limited seating, you can always grab your food and head to the area in front of the Southwark Cathedral to nibble down.
